Estrellita’s Snacks- Civic Center Plaza

Here is great spot for a quick lunch in the SF Civic Center area. It’s called Estrellita’s Snacks, and it’s located in a portable tent-type booth on Civic Center Plaza every onMonday, Thursday and Friday. They feature hand made Mexican and Salvadorean snacks such as delicious handmade pupusas and pastelitos. They also serve tacos and aguas frescas as well as yucca and plaintain chips.tent estrellitas

Here’s a shot of senora taking the masa and patting it around the filling (I had beans and cheese) and grilling right in front of the customer. The pupusas are $2.50 each, and you can choose from a variety of meats and vegetable fillings including chicharron, zucchini, mushroom, chicken, frijol and queso. For $5, you can order the pupusa loca with  a bit of everything. The aguas frescas are $2.00, and the flavors vary day to day. Today they had horchata, tamarindo and jamaica.

Here is my lunch for today: a bean and cheese pupusa along with a pork pastelito, which is a deep fried turnover which was filled with pork, carrot, lima bean, and corn.  The pupusa is served with a very fresh curtido of pickled cabbage, carrot, onion and jalapeno. I didn’t like the pastelito as much as the pupusas or tacos I’ve had here, but it was worth a try at $2.00.

Total cost for this lunch: $4.50! They are also at the Alemany Farmers market in Saturday and Sunday when they also feature a variety of soups/stews. I am excited because by special request, they are bringing their menudo to Civic Center this Tursday. I’ll let you all know how it is.

You can reach them at estrellitassnacks@hotmail.com or call Maria at (415)240-6305 (beware, little English spoken).
